Northgate to get 14-screen digital theater

The owner of Northgate Mall has made good on a promise to attract a new entertainment venue to the mall.

Feldman Mall Properties said Monday that it has signed with Rave Digital Media/Rave Motion Pictures to create a 14-screen, all-digital theater at Northgate. It is expected to open in 2008.

The theater will have about 2,850 seats, surround sound and digital projection, according to a news release.

"The addition of Rave Motion Pictures is a pivotal step in Feldman Mall Properties' transformation of the Northgate Mall," said Larry Feldman, CEO of the Phoenix-based real estate investment trust.

Dallas-based Rave also operates Rave Motion Pictures West Chester 18 on Civic Center Boulevard.

The new theater will replace the former Northgate Cinema, which closed last May. It will not be in the same location as the old five-screen theater, however, which was located in an outlot building, a spokesman for Feldman said.

Feldman (NYSE: FMP) acquired Northgate in 2005 for $100 million, and promised to transform the aging mall with new restaurants and entertainment. It is planning a $25 million outdoor streetscape, but lost an anchor tenant last fall when J.C. Penney packed up and moved north to the newly developed Stone Creek Towne Center.

Northgate Mall, on Colerain Avenue, is a regional mall anchored by Dillard's, Macy's and Sears.
